A winter storm will hit Wisconsin Tuesday

February 26th, 2012 at 10:35 am by under Weather

A winter storm will hit Wisconsin Tuesday.  There is a lot of moisture with this storm so heavy snow will fall in parts of  the state.  The big question is where will the heavy snow fall?  Sunday morning computer forecasts show the rain/snow line running from west to east right through the middle of NE Wisconsin.  That would mean the southern half of NE Wisconsin will see rain, while the north would get pounded with heavy wet snow.  A 40 mile shift in this rain/snow line would mean huge changes to your forecast.  The storm is currently off the coast of Northern California.  We’ll have a much better handle on the storms strength and snow amounts on Monday.  OK, so you still want snow numbers hu?  This is just one computer model estimate of snow, and the forecast will most likely change, so take this with a big grain of salt! Marinette 16”, Green Bay 10”, Oshkosh 4”.  Stay tuned to Fox11 News tonight at 9pm for the latest forecast.

A Few Flurries & Then Some Sun

February 25th, 2012 at 6:21 am by under Weather

Mostly cloudy skies and some flurries will continue this morning, then sunshine should increase this afternoon.  It will be breezy today and windy tomorrow so wind chills will be a factor when heading outside.  Our next storm system moves through the Upper Peninsula on Sunday and will bring light snow to the northern half of the area. Amounts look to be pretty light for Sunday with the Fox Valley seeing a showery mix of rain and snow.  Another storm system moves in for Tuesday and Wednesday. This storm could cause trouble around Wisconsin with Snow, Freezing Rain, Sleet, and Rain. Stay tuned to FOX 11 as this strong late winter storm approaches.

Weekend Outlook 022412

February 24th, 2012 at 11:35 am by under News, Weather

The clouds will stick around today with some snow showers and a high near 34.  As for the weekend, Saturday is looking better than Sunday.  The storm moving in for Sunday will bring the most snow to the northwest part of the state and into the U.P. of Michigan with 4 to 6 inches expected.  Before that the snow will be accumulating in North Dakota and Northern Minnesota.  There is a winter storm watch issued for parts of North Dakota and Minnesota for Saturday night through Sunday.   At this time it looks like   Northeast Wisconsin will feel the effects with strong winds on Sunday and snow changing and mixing with rain in Green Bay and the Fox Cities with the most snow accumulations to the northern parts of our viewing area. Track the storm yourself with our interactive radar.  Check back here to fox11online.com for updates and watch FOX 11 News at 5 and 9 and Good Day Wisconsin.

Another Storm Misses Wisconsin 02/12

February 23rd, 2012 at 11:33 am by under Weather

A storm system moving into Illinois (missing Wisconsin) will be responsible for stormy weather in parts of the U.S.

Heavy snow will move into Iowa and Northern Illinois tonight dropping up to six inches of snow.  Wisconsin will see relatively quiet weather.  Expect breezy conditions with a dusting of snow in most areas overnight (the exception being Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties where up to 1” will fall) .   Another chance for light snow (1” or less) will move in Sunday afternoon.

Thunderstorms will erupt late today into tonight from Alabama to Ohio.  Some storms will produce large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.  The greatest threat for tornadoes will be in Kentucky and far southern Indiana and Ohio.

Snow is South; Where’s ours? 022312

February 23rd, 2012 at 9:04 am by under News, Weather

Will the third time for snow be the charm for us?  We have been looking at a chance of snow tonight, Sunday and next Wednesday and it is looking like the middle of next week may be the best bet.  A mostly cloudy day is ahead for us.  Snow is possible overnight but the best chance  will be to the southern part of our viewing area; even there, only up to an inch of snow is expected.  The storm system bringing the snow is tracking much farther south than forecast yesterday so it’ll be another one that misses us.   There is a chance for heavy snow in Chicago overnight so if you have travel plans through there, car or air, be aware.   As for that major storm for the weekend, it’s looking like yet another near miss (or is it “near-hit”).  The track for that should stay more to the northwest of the area which means the heavier snow will be to the north and western part of the state and into the upper peninsula.  We have a chance of snow on Sunday into Monday morning but not much accumulation is expected at this time. That’s our second strike but it looks like the third time could be the one. Another storm that will develop near Colorado early next week will track to the northeast. It will have plenty of Gulf moisture to work with and temperatures will be cold enough to bring significant snow to a part Wisconsin on Wednesday.  Of course as we’ve seen just in the last 24 hours things could change so we’ll keep you updated here on fox11online.com and on Good Day Wisconsin and FOX 11 News at 5 and 9.  Have a great day.

Mild Then Snow & the latest on the weekend 022212

February 22nd, 2012 at 12:02 pm by under News, Weather

Another mild, breezy day is shaping up with highs near 38 and partly sunny skies but a storm system is approaching that will bring heavy snow to parts of the southern portion of the state tomorrow.  The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for that area with Fond du Lac, Sheboygan and Green Lake counties included from our viewing area.  In these counties there’s a possible 2 to 3 inches of snow but there will be more farther south.  If you are traveling south tomorrow please stay up on the conditions by visiting fox11online.com and watching FOX 11 News at 5, 9 and Good Day Wisconsin.  Our attention then turns to the major storm system that will impact us by the end of the weekend.  Details are still coming together on this storm but thinking as of today is that the track will take the center of the storm from southwest Minnesota to northern lower Michigan Sunday night into Monday evening.  With this track we’ll all get some snow but the most will fall “up north”.  The graphic below will change a lot over the next few days but it’s a start.  Stay tuned and have a great day!

Heavy Snow Headed For Southern Wisconsin

February 22nd, 2012 at 12:02 pm by under Weather

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect Thursday for southern portions of the Fox11 Viewing area.  The watch includes Green Lake, Fond du Lac, and Sheboygan counties; starting Thursday morning and lasting through Thursday evening.  A narrow band of 6 inches of snow will occur with this storm.  The exact location of that band is still somewhat uncertain.  At this time the heaviest snow will fall from south central Minnesota, through NE Iowa, and into southern Wisconsin.  Snow could be heavy at times impacting travel.  Severe weather expert Patrick Powell will track the storm tonight on Fox11 News @ 5pm.

Mild Month Continues 021612

February 16th, 2012 at 9:56 am by under News, Weather

It has been a very mild month so far and that trend continues through the next 7 days.  After morning fog and clouds we’ll see sun today with a high near 40°.  The normal high is 28° this time of year.  It is more than 8 degrees warmer than normal for the month and we’ve been above normal so far this winter. Check out the graphics below.  Meteorologist Doug Higgins created the one on the right and I updated it today because the departure from average became even higher due to the high of 38° yesterday.

Man in the Moon & Clear Skies 020812

February 8th, 2012 at 8:55 am by under News, Weather

Did you see the full moon last night or this morning? Just beautiful. That’s called the “Snow” moon although we don’t have a lot of snow to go along with it. In fact that full moon got so close this morning during the show, we could actually see the man in the moon (with a little help that is).  Grab the sunglasses as you head out today because we’ll see abundant sunshine courtesy of a high pressure area that builds to our west.  This will bring clear skies through Thursday then a cold front will drop down from Canada and give us a chilly weekend with high temperatures near 22 and lows in the single-digits.
