The great Mother’s Day weather will continue for the beginning of the work week. Expect abundant sunshine today with a high near 77° (Normal high for this time of the year in Green Bay is 66°) and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph. A storm system and associated cold front will drop into the state tomorrow and could trigger afternoon and evening thunderstorms but until it arrive we’ll have partly sunny conditions and highs near 78°. There is a chance, albeit small, for strong or severe storms with the biggest risk being large hail and gusty winds if storms indeed develop. The Storm Prediction Center currently has the southern part of the state under a “slight risk” for severe weather. Have a great day!

We started off rather cool this morning with temperatures of 30° in the Iron Mountain/Niagara area and 32° in Antigo. Most of the northeast Wisconsin was in the upper 30s and near 40. We’ll warm to near 70° with lots of sunshine.
Our next weather-maker is developing to the west and as the cold front moves into the state tomorrow, clouds will be on the increase but the day time hours should be nice with high temperatures near 75. The showers and thunderstorms will hold off until the evening and overnight hours and will be to the east by Saturday morning making for a nice weekend. Expect a high on Saturday of 66 with partly sunny skies and lots of sunshine Sunday and highs near 70…perfect Mother’s Day weather!

A fair weather, high pressure system will settle into the central part of the nation bringing abundant sunshine and warming temperatures to our area. Expect partly sunny skies today and a high near 62°. Tomorrow’s high will approach 70° and Friday will bring mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid 70s. A cold front pushes through Friday night into Saturday morning which could start the weekend off with scattered showers but it looks like a nice weekend overall. Have a great day!

We’ll start the day off nice with some sun but clouds and rain will move in this afternoon. We could even hear some thunder too. The rain is in association with an upper level low pressure area that is spinning from the northwest to our southeast bringing mostly cloudy skies but temperatures will still top out in the mid 60s. The normal high for this time of the year is 64° and we will be near or above that for the next 7 days. After today we’ll have a stretch of dry weather. Oshkosh has received about 7″ of rain so far and that makes is the fourth wettest May on record and there’s plenty more month to go!

Check out this graphic of the estimated rainfall totals for the region in May. Notice the dark red band through Green Lake, Winnebago and Calumet Counties. That’s where 4 to 7 inches has fallen already this month.

A lot of rain in May 050712

We’ll have a relatively dry week ahead with the best chances for rain on Tuesday and on Friday night into Saturday. The good news is that the storm systems won’t be major and at this time it looks like the areas that get rain will get up to a half an inch over that period so already saturated areas should see some relief. Since Wednesday’s storms the rain totals have been impressive especially in Winnebago, Calumet and Manitowoc Counties. Oshkosh has received more than 6 inches of rain and Manitowoc more than 4 inches…this is above the monthly average of about 3 inches of rain! Yikes! There’s a chance of a shower today and a better chance tomorrow with the possibility of a thunderstorm as well but the rest of the work week will remain dry.

Showers, Storms moving into East-Central Wisconsin

Line of storms moving through our area

We have a line of showers and storms moving into the east-central parts of Wisconsin as we speak. This line originated well to our west earlier today, and thankfully is weakening as it approaches our neck of the woods. While it is weakening as it moves in as well, you can still expect to see heavy downpours, some brief gusty winds, some cloud-to-ground lightning, and some small hail from this complex as it pushes through this evening.

We’ll then dry out for most of the rest of the night. A few isolated showers and storms are possible, especially towards morning. Another risk for thunderstorms exists tomorrow afternoon, and this is what we’re really keeping an eye on. Large hail and some strong winds are possible with these, as well as heavy rain once again. This will exacerbate the burgeoning flooding problems along the Upper Fox River, and could cause pooling on local roads once again. Thankfully, it appears we’ll be relatively dry over the upcoming week, save for a few isolated showers and storms on Monday and Wednesday.

Packers talk defensive draft

Hanging out at Lambeau as the Packers defensive draft rolls on … five picks, all defense. Ted Thompson said last night, this is still the ‘best player available’ approach in action … but the Packers had needs on defense, and they’re being addressed.

Maine safety Jerron McMillian was excited and engaging in his phone conference with media here. Sounded really enthusiastic about getting drafted, and admitted he was surprised to be drafted as high as he was. McMillian also talked about Nick Collins, said he’d always followed Collins’ career since he came from a small school (Bethune-Cookman).

Dom Capers described defensive tackle Mike Daniels out of Iowa as a football guy. In his phone conference, that came through. My favorite part, by far, was when he was asked about his favorite ‘move’ to get to the quarterback. His answer: ‘hustle.’ Good answer. At 5’11, Daniels also said he’s been overcoming doubts about his height as a defensive lineman his whole career. In his pre-draft press conference, Ted Thompson pointed to linebacker DJ Smith as a guy who wasn’t ideal height, but has worked out in the NFL so far. Thompson may have found another one.

Packers have some time (barring a trade) until their next pick, late in the sixth round.

Rain and Snow (Yes, Snow) Tonight 041912

Showers and thunderstorms pushed through the area yesterday with Green Bay and locations north picking up about a tenth of an inch of rain for the most part. When the sunshine peaked out of the clouds in the afternoon the temperatures reached into the upper 60s. That warm weather is gone as winds have turned to the northeast but we’ll have another round of rain late this afternoon and tonight with some locations picking up an inch of rainfall. Highs for the next few days will be a bit below normal (56°). The real weather story though is the fact that we’ll see some snow in the northwest counties overnight and it may add up to 1 to 3 inches by tomorrow morning. That’s why there’s a winter weather advisory in effect for a portion of Northeast Wisconsin overnight. There will probably even be some white stuff on the grass in the Green Bay vicinity by Friday morning.

So we will have a statewide tornado drill today and snow overnight. That’s Wisconsin weather for you. In fact it was one year ago that witnter storm Gabe hit the area dumping more than 10 inches of snow. This was not the latest for snow around here though; we’ve seen some late in November. Look for mostly cloudy skies tomorrow with a chance of morning showers and drizzle and a high near 46. Right now the weekend looks dry with highs in the low to mid 50s.

Less Windy Today 041712

It’s less windy than yesterday. Peak wind gusts Monday were 45 mph in Appleton, Oshkosh and Manitowoc; 46 mph in Green Bay and 51 mph in Algoma. The strong winds even did some damage in the area including knocking down a willow tree in Neena h. After a frosty start, things warm up under partly sunny skies into the 50s later with winds becoming southerly at 5 to 10 mph. A storm system moves in tonight and brings showers tomorrow with strong southerly winds kicking up temperatures to the mid 60s. Another system will bring rain Thursday afternoon and some snow could be accumulating by early Friday morning. Yes, I said snow. Right now it’s too early to tell how much if any we will receive but it’s April so it won’t be on the ground long. Have a great day!

Winds Keep Howling 041612

A cold front will push through the state today resulting in dropping temperatures. In fact we’ve already seen our high for the day as temperatures will fall to the mid 40s by this afternoon with a chance of rain showers and the winds will continue to howl at 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph at times. There is a wind advisory in effect for the southern portion of our viewing area with gusts of 45 mph possible. We may even see a snow shower this evening before skies start to clear and areas of frost develop by tomorrow morning. A nice day tomorrow with mostly sunny skies and highs near 53.
